Form I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification: How Can a Notary Help?

At [Your Business Name], we assist with preparing, printing, and notarizing various forms, including Form I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification.

What is Form I-9?

Form I-9, also known as the Employment Eligibility Verification form, is a document required by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to confirm an employee’s identity and authorization to work in the U.S. Employers must complete and retain Form I-9 for every employee, regardless of their citizenship or immigration status.

The form consists of three sections:

Section 1: Employee Information and Attestation – The employee completes this section, providing personal details and confirming their work authorization status.

Section 2: Employer or Authorized Representative Verification – The employer or an authorized representative (such as a notary public) reviews the employee’s original documents to verify their identity and work eligibility. Employees must present either: One document from List A (proving both identity and work eligibility) OR one document from List B (identity) and one from List C (work eligibility)

Section 3: Reverification and Rehires – Used for employees needing re-verification due to expiring work authorization or rehires.

How Can a Notary Assist with Form I-9?

A notary public is a state-authorized professional who verifies identities and authenticates documents. For Form I-9, a notary can act as an authorized representative to help employers complete Section 2 by:

✅ Examining the employee’s original documents in person
✅ Ensuring the documents match the information in Section 1
✅ Completing and signing Section 2 as the authorized representative

It’s important to note that a notary does not provide legal advice or determine an individual’s employment eligibility—this responsibility remains with the employer. Notaries must also follow all USCIS guidelines when assisting with Form I-9.
